I have yet to read Nabokov’s Pale Fire but I have Timon of Athens from which it takes its title.
In Act Four, Timon, assailed by bandits, is hardly concerned for, he reasons, theiving is the nature of things:
the moon’s an arrant thief, And her pale fire she snatches from the sun
… and this jumped into my mind as I witnessed last night’s eclipse.
